Object: In the summer the Milky Way can, in the northern hemisphere, be seen running through Cygnus down to Sagittarius quite easily if the skies are reasonably dark. The Milky Way is our home galaxy, the milky way being the spiral arms and the dust lanes. The whole galaxy is about 120,000 ly across, with the Sun being about 30,000 ly from the centre - the bright core of the galaxy. (The bright "star", lower left in the Sagittarius images, is Jupiter.)
